Goal

The goal of Program Four is to learn how food banks do not provide long-term solutions to food shortages; what is needed instead is a guaranteed Living Wage.

Steps

1. Show the video "Program Four: Poverty and Food"

2. Ask students to form small groups to describe the following impressions from the video:

  • What are the best ways to address the problem of hunger?
  • What did the Canadian Medical Association declared that
    poverty is the biggest barrier to what?
  • What is Community Harvest and how does it help the
    community?
  • What is the group Put Food in the Budget and what are they trying to accomplish?

3. Option for Take-Home Assignment. Using the internet, find more facts about:

  • Put Food in the Budget and the work they do.
  • Community Harvest and if there is one in your community.
  • Ways to get involved to help fight poverty.
  • How Canadian Catholics can support the work of Sisters of Providence.
