Goal

The goal of Program Six is to introduce students to Byzantine Catholicism and how it is incorporated into the Roman Catholic life of Madonna House, and its importance to the community and individuals.

Steps

1. Show the video "Program Six: Uniting East and West"

2. Ask students to form small groups to describe the following impressions from the video:

  • What are some differences between Byzantine and Roman liturgies?
  • Who was Archbishop Raya and what impact did he have on Madonna House?
  • What is poustinia?
  • What are icons? What is their significance for the Eastern rite?
  • Is there a Byzantine Catholic church near you? Have you attended? Would you like to go?

3. Option for Take-Home Assignment. Find out more about:

  • How did the church become Byzantine and Roman? When did it happen? What are other rites in the church that acknowledge the Pope in Rome?
