Ever wonder what has been happening with Canadian Catholic Aboriginal communities?
The Building Bridges Project of the Assembly of Western Catholic Bishops is proud to present this collection of programs depicting some of the major aspects of Catholic Aboriginal spiritual life today.
Filmed in cooperation with Newman Theological College, Edmonton and on-location at “Directions in Aboriginal Ministry,” a four-day conference at the Star of the North Retreat Centre, Saint Albert, Alberta, this series is based on interviews with key leadership, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, in today’s Church.
The many decades of work of Catholic Aboriginal elders have taken on a new relevance with the launching of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission or TRC.
Through a series of hearings with aboriginal communities and individuals, across Canada, the goal of TRC is to bring forward a factual record of the history of the church- and government- run residential schools, the abuses that occurred, and the long term cultural and personal damage that ensued.
TRC was established as part of the court-approved final settlement agreement between former Indian residential school students along with Aboriginal organizations and the Government of Canada, as well as the historically-involved Christian Churches and Church entities or organizations.
Above all, the purpose of TRC is to chart out a process of healing for both Aboriginal and non- aboriginal Canadians today.
Welcome to kateritv.com. Through the programs presented on this channel, you will be getting to know how Canada’s Catholic Aboriginal communities are going about the healing process, how they define that process, how they draw on ancient traditions and their modern Catholic faith to make it happen.
This could be the beginning of your journey into an important part of history and life today. Just press on one of the programs, watch it, have a look at the study guide and go from there.
We would love to hear from you your feedback and any adventures or encounters this web site leads you to.
Enjoy.
